In person: Open-Source Software tools in use in Equinor and how you can use them too

open-source

The intergrated reservoir modelling network group is happy to present open source software tools in use in Equinor. Equinor has had an "open first" approach to code and data for many years. This strategy allows us to collaborate more easily with our business partners, as well as having lots of other side-effects. We're pleased to showcase some of our open projects at this very meeting. Don't miss out on this great event.

ResInsight

An open-source 3D visualization and post-processing tool developed by Equinor for reservoir simulation results. It provides high-performance handling of large Eclipse and Flow models, enabling interactive visualization of grids, properties, well trajectories, completions, and simulation results. Designed to support reservoir engineers and geoscientists, ResInsight offers powerful tools for analysis, reporting, and uncertainty evaluation in field development workflows.

OPM Flow

An open-source reservoir simulator developed by the Open Porous Media (OPM) initiative with contributions from Equinor and partners. It is capable of large-scale, fully implicit simulations of multiphase flow in porous media and supports industry-standard Eclipse input decks. Designed for both research and field applications, OPM Flow provides a transparent and community-driven alternative for reservoir modeling and forecasting.

ERT and EVEREST

ERT is a workflow manager that was developed as part of the FMU technology development process. is designed for running ensembles of dynamical models such as reservoir models, to do sensitivity analysis and data assimilation. ERT supports data assimilation using the Ensemble Smoother (ES) and Ensemble Smoother with Multiple Data Assimilation (ES-MDA) and Ensemble Information Filter (EnIF). ERT handles communication between the other pieces of software in charge of geological modeling, well modeling, flow simulation, seismic forward modeling etc.

The primary goal of the Everest tool is to find optimal well planning and production strategies by utilizing an ensemble of reservoir models (e.g., an ensemble of geologically consistent models). This will enable robust decisions about drilling schedule and well placement, to achieve results of significant practical value.

Cirrus

An open-source, massively parallel, thermal CCS reservoir simulator developed by OpenGoSim through support from Equinor. It features both two-phase and compositional functionalities to model CO2 storage in saline aquifers and depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs. In this presentation, the background and current status of Cirrus is discussed through several field application examples. Links to resources for downloading and installation will also be provided.

Completor

Completor is a tool to assist on installation and evaluation of Inflow Control Technologies in reservoir simulation. Completor is a pre-processor tool that will alter the reservoir simulator data and adding inflow control technologies. It has capabilities to install various inflow control technologies currently available in the market, from ICD, AICD, and ICV.

Decision Optimization Tool (DOT)

The Decision Optimization Tool (DOT) is a prototype of a web application to guide users and teams through complex decision-making processes. The prototype utilizes the concepts of Decision Quality and Structured Decision Making. The web application contains features for documented framing exercises (issue list, objectives, decision hierarchy, strategy table, etc.) and a graphical interface for the creation of Influence Diagrams and the visualization of a resulting Decision Trees.
