Development in the player landscape There were 24 oil and gas companies on the NCS in 2024, which is the lowest number since activity started. A number of large international companies have sold their stakes, and considerable consolidation of companies has taken place. This in return has helped several other companies to bolster their positions. Read more

Exploration activity and resource growth Investments in exploration activity, the number of wildcat wells and resource growth on the NCS have been lower over the past decade compared with the previous one. The development in exploration activity reveals a distinct shift from global to Norwegian players, and to some extent, also European companies. Companies whose primary activity is on the NCS account for about 60 per cent of exploration investments over the past decade. Read more

Composition of licensees at time of award In the past, the composition of ownership when production licences were awarded was characterised by a broad range of national, European and international companies. In recent years, the trend has been toward increasing domination by Norwegian players. Read more
