At Equinor, Open-source software isn’t just a project choice — it’s a strategic direction! We believe in open, collaborative development because it accelerates innovation, strengthens partnerships , and fosters continuous learning across teams, industries, and institutions. Whether we develop tools internally or support suppliers and research institutes, open source helps us remove barriers, improve flexibility and transparency while building secure, sustainable digital solutions.

In our Subsurface domain, this strategy is at the core of how we develop and use tools for Dynamic Subsurface Assessment of our fields. Here are some of the open-source tools — among many other applications — in our dynamic subsurface assessment toolbox that we use and support:

  • OPM Flow – A fully implicit, black-oil reservoir simulation tool with support for advanced well modeling, network modeling, and large-scale field simulations.
  • DROGON – is an example of a full Fast Model Update reservoir modelling project, built with synthetic data.
  • ResInsight – A powerful 3D visualization tool for reservoir simulation data, supporting interpretation, simulation results analysis, data preparation, and communication.
  • ERTAn Ensemble based tool for sensitivity analysis, data assimilation, and history matching using ensemble methods.
  • EVERESTA reservoir robust optimization tool for robust well planning and production strategies under uncertainty.
  • eCalc An energy and Emission forecasting tool integrating data from multiple disciplines for GHG analysis.
  • Cirrus – A high-performance Reservoir simulation tool for CO2 storage applications, modeling plume behavior, caprock integrity, and pressure evolution

We’re proud to share, collaborate, and contribute — because software reflects our understanding, and that understanding grows best together.
