Carbon dioxide (CO2) storage, akin to waste management rather than oil and gas (O&G) production, necessitates distinct monitoring approaches with safety as the paramount concern. To address this need while aligning with the more constrained economics of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), it is essential to rethink Monitoring, Measurement, and Verification (MMV) strategies.

By implementing more frequent yet cost-effective monitoring, we can mitigate risks and avoid surprises. This presentation explores the integration of micro-seismic data, well information, flow models, risk assessments, and spot seismic techniques to establish a comprehensive subsurface alarm system. Such a system can trigger timely actions, including 4D seismic surveys, drilling observation wells, and conducting workovers, thereby fostering trust among CCS stakeholders and ensuring the safety and efficacy of CO2 storage operations.
