AI fault detection makes it possible to generate large numbers of fault interpretations, far more quickly than traditional interpretation. In principle, these outputs can be used to rapidly build detailed structural frameworks. In practice, however, AI can also produce many poor-quality, incomplete, or geologically inconsistent surfaces.

Cleaning up extracted faults, quality-controlling the results, and stitching individual surfaces into a coherent structural framework can sometimes feel daunting and may even seem like more effort than it’s worth.

We will highlight the value of building good fault models, look at practical approaches for turning AI-derived faults into high-quality structural frameworks, and discuss how to decide when AI-assisted interpretation adds real value and when a good old-fashioned manual interpretation may still be the better approach.
