    22/02/2011 During geological field work for the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate in the summer of 2007, geologists found a well-preserved skeleton of a small ichthyosaurus on a plateau near Muenfjellet, on the western coast of Edgeøya in Svalbard. Even though remnants of ichthyosaurs are not uncommon on Svalbard, it is very rare for the head to be preserved – which was the case with this discovery.

    05/01/2007 There has been no significant change in the overall estimate of petroleum resources on the Norwegian continental shelf as of 31 December 2006.  The estimate is 13 GSm3 o.e. The accounts show a limited addition of new resources from exploration and zero growth as regards gross reserves; in fact, there has been a small downward adjustment of gross oil reserves (-16 Msm3).  On the more positive side, a number of projects have matured, and new projects have been initiated on fields.

    05/01/2007 26 exploration wells were spudded in 2006, of which 17 were wildcat wells and nine were appraisal wells.  23 exploration wells have been completed.  The number of exploration wells doubled as compared with 2005; however, fewer wells were drilled than planned, largely as a result of the drilling rig shortage.

    05/01/2007 A total of 16 new companies were pre-qualified as licensees or operators on the Norwegian shelf in 2006.  Another ten companies were being evaluated at year-end.

    05/01/2007 A total of 248 million Sm³ marketable oil equivalents (o.e.) were produced in 2006. This is 16 million Sm³ o.e. less than in the record year 2004.  One new field, Ringhorne Øst, commenced production during the year.  An additional six new fields are expected to start producing in 2007; Alvheim, Blane, Enoch, Ormen Lange, Snøhvit and Vilje.

    05/01/2007 We are currently experiencing a period of vigorous activity on the Norwegian shelf.  Higher oil prices have brought significant increases in both activity level and costs.  Investment trend prognoses up to 2011 indicate that activity will remain high.  A number of modification and improved recovery projects on producing fields (Ekofisk, Eldfisk, Snorre, Troll oil and Valhall), together with new developments (35/9-1 Gjøa and 6507/5-1 Skarv), contribute to the vigorous activity.

    05/01/2007 Press release 1/2007: Gas production on the Norwegian shelf in 2006 reached record levels, while oil production was lower than expected.  26 exploration wells were spudded in 2006, which is twice as many as in the previous year.  However, only four discoveries were made.  The shelf is otherwise characterized by a shortage of rigs and increasing prices.  The shelf in 2006 contains facts from the year that has passed, as well as the outlook for the next five-year period.

    30/01/2003 No sooner was the announcement of the 18th licensing round completed before the authorities announced new acreage in connection with awards in predefined areas (TFO 2004). In connection with TFO 2004 the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) will present the oil companies with a gift package containing specially organized information on the areas in the announcement.
